Search Engine Marketing
What is SEM?
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is paid advertising through search engines (such as Google) to boost the quality and quantity of traffic to your website.
With SEM, you bid on keywords for your advertisement to appear alongside relevant search results.
Why is SEM so effective?
Google receives over 57,000 searches per second on any given day. (B2C)
That is a LOT of searches, and a lot of potential eyes on your business.
Marketing through a search engine gets your business in front of customers who are looking exactly for what you are selling. They are already searching and ready to buy so getting in ahead of your competitors gives you a solid edge.
This type of marketing allows you to target your audience so that you aren’t spending your advertising budget on customers who aren’t interested in what you are selling. For example, if you are a beautician you probably want to be viewed by people searching for “beauty therapist” or “who will take to my eyebrows with a whipper snipper because it’s been a while”, not a businessman looking for a new laptop who may not care whether or not his eyebrows look like caterpillars.
Get in front of those hairy, overgrown eyebrows.
How can I make the most of SEM?
Research! SEM effectiveness is based on setting up your advertisement effectively and researching just the right keywords for your niche. Keyword research can be quite complex as it involves using multiple tools to work out what people are searching for and what will give you the best ROI.
SEM is also not a set and forget practice. You need to monitor results, what is working and what isn’t and adjust accordingly. While it is extremely effective (one of the most effective forms of advertising!) with high ROI, it takes work to make it work best for your business.
